- For Digital Pilipinas Convenor Amor Maclang, the partnership aims to ensure that local companies will invest in the fintech complex with a combined population of two billion from the two regions.
- Meanwhile, for Fintech Network Africa CEO Patrick Saidu Conteh, this collaboration demonstrates the strong partnership among key digital finance stakeholders in the spirit of sharing innovative technologies, knowledge and best practices to support sustainable development in our country.
Aiming to promote the digital economy, identifying fintech, decentralized assets and fundraising as focus areas for convergence in the two regions, key players from the fintech industry in Africa and Southeast Asia (SEA) have signed a partnership that sets the stage for the first Africa x ASEAN Digital Economies and Fintech Month, both taking place the week of October 2-6, 2023, in Manila, Philippines, and Nairobi, Kenya.
Africa x Southeast Asia Fintech Partnership
“This landmark agreement marks the beginning of collaboration between the two regions in advocacy, fundraising, payments, loans, decentralized assets, start-up development, regulatory exchanges, and education,” said the parties involved at the signing at the Fintech Forum in Kigali, Rwanda.

For Africa, the partnership is represented by the Africa Fintech Network (AFN), a 35-country network from the region, together with AFN CEO Patrick Saidu Conteh, Nigerian Fintech Association President Segun Aina, and Nigeria Premier Oiwoh Interbank Settlement Systems CEO.
“Africa and ASEAN are uniquely placed to leapfrog the development of the digital economy. The recent signing of cooperation agreements with our various ASEAN partners as ASEAN One Fintech Movement/GIFT/Digital Pilipinas & Fintech Africa Network demonstrates the strong emerging partnerships among key digital finance stakeholders in the spirit of sharing innovative technologies, knowledge and best practices to support sustainable development in our country,” Conteh said.
Meanwhile, for the ASEAN partners, who witnessed the signing of the partnership agreement were the Monetary Authority of Singapore’s Chief Fintech Officer Sopnendu Mohanty, Chairman of the Board of the Global Fintech Institute David Lee, Executive of the National Bank of Cambodia Ouk Sarat, Chairman of the Cambodian Fintech Association Remi Pell, and Fintech Philippines Association Administrator Amor Maclang.

“By launching the Chartered Fintech Professional (CFtP) professional qualification program in collaboration with our partners Digital Pilipinas and Fintech Africa Network, GFI is committed to leveraging this partnership to empower and nurture the future generation of fintech talent in ASEAN and Africa with a global mindset, framework rigorous knowledge to keep abreast of industry developments and trends, and strong ethical standards.” Lee highlighted.
Meanwhile, the entities involved also announced that interested entities who wish to be part of the October celebrations can contact Conteh or Maclang.
“Africa and ASEAN share nearly parallel journeys in our digital economies, and our commitment to standing alongside our African Fintech Leaders ensures that engagement and investment in a combined population of 2 billion as a fintech market will be high on the agenda of many companies, countries and organization,” concluded Maclang.
