The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) said cryptocurrency investment fraud rose 183% from $907 million in 2021 to $2.57 billion in 2022, according to data from the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3). The FBI also warned the public about a “surge in cryptocurrency investment schemes.”

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) released its 2022 Internet Crime Report last week. The report was compiled using data from the Internet Crime Complaints Center (IC3) which “serves as a public resource for reporting cyber attacks and incidents,” the bureau explained.
“In 2022, investment fraud is the most expensive scheme reported to IC3. Investment fraud complaints increased from $1.45 billion in 2021 to $3.31 billion in 2022, which is 127% [increase]wrote the FBI, adding:
In the complaint, cryptocurrency investment scams increased from $907 million in 2021 to $2.57 billion in 2022, an increase of 183%.
“Crypto investment scams are seeing an unprecedented increase in the number of victims and loss of dollars for these investors. Many victims have assumed large debts to cover losses from these investment scams and the most targeted age group reporting this type of scam is victims aged 30 to 49 years,” the report details.
The FBI is also highlighting cryptocurrency investment scams that are prevalent in 2022, such as those related to liquidity mining, hacked social media accounts, celebrity impersonations, real estate professionals and jobs.
Following the release of its most recent Internet Crime Report, the FBI issued a public service announcement Monday, warning the public of “a surge in cryptocurrency investment schemes.”
Citing data from IC3, the bureau explained: “Criminals, usually based outside the country, defrauded victims of more than two billion US dollars in 2022 using this scheme.” Announcement note:
These schemes are socially engineered and backed by trust, usually starting as romance or confidence scams and developing into cryptocurrency investment scams.
