Adding to a growing list of radical implementations to increase Twitter’s profits and promote citizen journalism, Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced that content creators on the social media platform can now monetize their content.
Since Musk took over Twitter, the company has taken some drastic steps to turn itself into a profitable business, including mass layoffs and introducing Twitter Blue subscriptions. While many verified individuals have previously countered requests for a monthly fee to earn a ‘Blue tick’ on Twitter, Musk sees it as a much-needed revenue stream for the company.
Recent user-centric changes — which allow users to monetize all forms of posts on Twitter globally — are targeted at increasing follower engagement and creating new revenue streams on the social media platform.

The ‘Subscriptions’ feature allows Twitter users to charge followers a monthly price “from one of the price points provided by Twitter.” Once paid, subscribers get access to the creator’s exclusive content, not viewable in public.
Twitter will allow creators to keep up to 97% of earnings up to $50,000 in lifetime earnings, after which the revenue share drops to 80% for creators. Social media has partnered with payment processor Stripe to pay creators on Twitter.
However, revenue sharing will only start once a user reaches a minimum threshold of $50. Subscriptions are non-refundable even if the creator’s Twitter account is suspended for any reason. In such a scenario, users must manually unsubscribe to avoid automatic monthly payments to inactive Twitter accounts.
Crypto Twitter members, who have amassed credibility and a large following on Twitter due to years of posting, welcomed the introduction of creator subscriptions with arms wide open.
