- Mara Victoria Quiones Triana judges, using Horizon Worlds technology offered by Meta.
- The 2.5 thousand people who participated in the audience via Youtube have different points of view.
As far as we know, Colombian courts created legal history by conducting one of the country’s first judicial proceedings in the metaverse. The trial took place on February 15. And encouraged by the judge of the court Magdalena Mara Victoria Quiones Triana. It uses the Horizon Worlds technology offered by Meta to create the impression of a single virtual location. The court depicted the parties involved in the case using animated characters.
Additionally, Quiones says that one of the most important steps in the metaverse is sending verification numbers to the email associated with each party. As a means of establishing that they are who they say they are.
Quiones made the following comments about the relevance of this technology to the court system:
“Metaverse is a technological tool that can facilitate access to the administration of justice. The use of information technology in the development of the judicial process has an important goal of facilitating and speeding up the process.”
Various Viewpoints
While there were no obstacles during the trial, the 2,500 people who participated in the public hearing via YouTube had differing views on the usefulness of the metaverse in this context. Some people approved of the move, although others said there was no benefit from video-based sessions. One of the arguments against this kind of virtual procedure is that, using metaverse avatars rather than actual videos, it is impossible to analyze the psychological features of the participants.
One participant suggested increasing the frequency of using metaverse audiences because of the time and money savings they provide compared to traditional hearings for citizens who may live far from courthouses.
