Web3 venture maker Chainway launched a new protocol called “Proof of Innocence” on Jan. 18, which allows Tornado Cash (TORN) users to benefit from extra anonymity while proving that their funds were not stolen.
With this protocol, Tornado Cash users can prove that their funds are not coming from a sanctioned or blacklisted address without revealing their identity.
The announcement post summarizes the function of the protocol by stating:
“The “Proof of Innocence” protocol adds an extra layer to this process by allowing users to prove that their commitment is not on a given list of commitments. This helps ensure that users are not hackers or other bad actors who have been penalized or flagged for illegal activity.”
How it works
According to Chainway’s announcement blog post, users can initiate this protocol when they wish to withdraw funds from Tornado Cash.
Users can provide zero-knowledge evidence showing that the funds they wish to withdraw are safely stored within Tornado Cash. Zero-knowledge proof excludes real addresses from user funds using the Merkle-tree data structure, which allows tracking of entered addresses without revealing the identity of the holder.
This protocol is accessible on GitHub and currently only works with Tornado Cash.
