- Ordinals’ NFT token protocol will soon roll out NFTs on the Bitcoin mainnet.
- Ordinal received massive criticism from the Bitcoin ecosystem, as many rejected the vision of its creator.
Ordinals, a protocol created to enable NFT printing on the Bitcoin blockchain, has been in circulation since its launch on January 21. Even if NFTs are usually minted on other blockchains such as Ethereum and Polygon, Casey Rodarmor who is behind the creation of Ordinals brings NCT writing to the Bitcoin blockchain. When comparing it to NFTs, he refers to these artifacts as “a higher standard”. Bearing in mind these artifacts cannot be stored off-chain and on a centralized server with backdoor locks.
Ordinal also has a special implementation known as Ord. Ord allows users to track the exact location of a particular satoshi (a satoshi is the smallest unit of Bitcoin, 1 satoshi = 0.00000001 BTC) and an ordinal number that has been assigned by the Ordinal protocol. Individual satoshis bearing arbitrary content can also be created, shared and viewed.
With the arrival of Ordinals, Satoshis can now be inscribed with a variety of content including videos, and images which can be transferred in a NFT-like manner.
Bitcoin proponents are dissatisfied with Ordinal
As usual, there are two sides to the “coin”. There is debate about which issues carry mixed signals. Many claim that the launch of Ordinals dispelled the original idea and purpose of creating Bitcoin. For this, the creators of Ordinal confirmed that Bitcoin’s creation went beyond the intentions of its creators.
Casey Rodaarmor, former Bitcoin Core contributor talks about the criticism he has received. She admits to loving the haters and explaining that they instead helped more people find out about the project because they were more involved in criticizing it.
“I think the ability to not only NFT Bitcoin, but to make it much better, for both technical and social reasons, is great for Bitcoin, and would be great for adoption and goodwill, and getting people interested. Fun-loving Bitcoin. We’re not having enough fun!” he said while speaking on the project.
Ordinal itself is not yet free from malfunctions and implications. As more people gain access to the myriad NFT tokens on the Bitcoin network, usage has increased, and the result has been increased transaction fees on the Bitcoin network. Transaction fees on the Bitcoin network have now reached levels last seen in over a year.

Ordinals was also exposed to shocking pornographic images inscribed on the Bitcoin Blockchain, via the Ordinals protocol. The image has since been deleted, but persisted for an hour before being deleted.
Casey Rodarmor told Cointelegraph that he is working to ensure that images like these don’t make it to the Ordinals website.
